How to make sure your posters and pop-up or exhibit display banner designs look great!

Posters and displays should be eye-catching!

Every year I get the opportunity of working on various promotional posters and display banners for my clients. I’m always so comforted when I am asked to design these important marketing materials for my customers, rather than having them go to a print shop or – *gasp* – do it themselves. There are crucial rules to follow for good poster and banner design, just as there are for any brand material.

1. Make it easy to read.

The top priority of a poster or banner is to inform the reader about your event or service. The headline or logo should grab the viewer’s eye from a distance and draw them to the piece. The typeface must be legible yet interesting and stay within existing brand parameters where required.

2. Ensure good visual hierarchy.

After the headline or logo, it’s important to ensure that the details about your event or services are provided in a clear concise way. Less is more! Don’t get too wordy. You can always add some fine print if you feel more explanation is needed.

3. Eye-catching contrast in the design.

You need to grab someone’s attention here! High contrast between design elements can help make this happen.

4. Location, location, location.

Where is the poster or banner being displayed? This will determine the size of the piece as well as how large each element of the design needs to be in relation to the whole.

5. Use plenty of space.

Make sure your text spacing isn’t too tight – it’s important that people can read this from a distance! Give the content some room around the edges so that it doesn’t feel crammed. And, going back to point 1, what’s the first thing you want people to see? Make sure it’s prominent.

Here are some samples of posters and display banners produced at Sumack Loft over the past couple of years.
